Cherrapunji, located in Meghalaya state, North-East India, is easily a contender for the most inspiring and incredible places we've visited in Asia so far. Cherrapunji is the second wettest place on Earth. All this rain does have its perks though because without it, you wouldn't see the incredible waterfalls that Cherrapunji is famous for. In this video we show you the waterfalls cascading down from the Eco Tourism Park, the Nohsngithiang Falls (Seven Sisters Falls), Nohkhalikai Falls (340m, tallest plunge waterfall in India) and Rainbow Falls (incredibly beautiful remote jungle waterfall). Many of these waterfalls (except for Rainbow falls) are view-able from viewpoints near the town of Sohra (Cherrapunji town). Cherrapunji is also known for the unique and fascinating living root bridges. These all natural bridges are hand-made by the tribal Khasi & Jaintia people, from the aerial roots of the rubber fig tree (ficus elastica). The aerial roots are interwoven across rivers to form incredibly strong and durable bridges, allowing the people to traverse the river even during heavy floods. To see the living root bridges, we trek from the small village of Tyrna to the remote tribal village of Nongriat. In Nongriat you can find a homestay and stay there a few nights to experience the famous double decker living root bridge, which is found in the village itself. You can also make daily treks into the surrounding wilderness, using Nongriat as a base, to see more amazing living root bridges and the incredibly beautiful rainbow waterfall. MONUMENTS OF INDIA SERIES | EPISODE 2 Kumbhalgarh Fort | THE GREAT WALL OF INDIA After the largest statue in the world we moved to the longest wall of the country, our journey to explore the great monuments India can never be complete without exploring the Kumbhalgarh fort. Every fort in India has its unique architecture and history, but there is probably no fort that can match the grandeur of the Kumbhalgarh fort. The road approaching to Kumbhalgarh is really narrow, yet it provides one of the best road trip experience in the country in fact the remoteness is real beauty of the place. This single strip of road will introduce you to the lush green landscape of southern Rajasthan. But one has to be mindful of the turns and unexpected fellow travellers. Standing on the Aravali ranges at a height 1100 meters. The fort was built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century and that’s where it derived its name Kumbhalgarh. While the early history of the fort could not be traced back, the original fort is believed to have been built by King Samprati of the Mauran Age, his inclination towards Jainism is reflected in the fact that out of the 360 temples in the fort premiseS 300 of them are Jain temples. Out of the 84 forts in his dominion, Rana Kumbha is said to have built 32 of them, of which Kumbhalgarh is the largest and most elaborate. Kumbhalgarh also separates Mewar and Marwar region and was used as a place of refuge for the rulers of Mewar at times of danger. It was the year 1443, when continuous attacks by Alauddin Khilji and other powerful forces has reduced the influence of Mewar kingdom significantly. In order to wade of the imminent danger Rana Kumbha made an ambitious plan to construct the largest fort of the area. Truly a symbol of human determination overpowering the improbable. Kumbhalgarh fort also holds the honour of being the birthplace of the brave Maharana Pratap, the great warrior of Mewar who didn’t succumb to the mighty Mughal empire. The strategic location of the fort made made it impregnable to direct assaults. Ahmed Shah I of Gujarat, who is known as the founder of Ahmedabad city, attacked the fort in 1457, but could not breach its strong defence it was a local belief then that the forest deity or the Banmata deity in the fort, protected it and hence he destroyed the temple. The Kumbhalgarh fort remained almost invincible throughout the Mewar rulers era. Though it was captured only once in the history by the joint army of four kings - Mughal king Akbar, Amer’s Man Singh, Mewar’s Udai Singh, and the Sultan of Gujarat. But it was again recaptured by Maharana Pratap in 1585. There were additions made by Maharanas of Mewar, but the original structure built by Maharana Kumbha remains. The fort is among the largest fort complexes in the world, and the second largest fort in India after Chittorgarh Fort. The wall that defines the perimeter of the fort is the world’s second largest wall after ‘ The Great wall of china’. It continuously stretches to 36 Kms in length and is 15 feet wide, enough for two cars to move together. After reaching the top of the Kumbhalgarh fort you can see miles into the beautiful landscape, even the Marwar and dunes of the Thar desert are visible in the clear weather. The Fort is bestowed with mesmerising natural beauty. If you are traveling in the monsoon, which is the best season to visit, you will find lush green Aravali ranges surrounding the fort, the clouds flying over your head and occasional showers.The ‘ Badal Mahal’ at the top of the fort is like a crown on the mountain peak and truly justifies its name. The Fort is indeed an architectural wonder, which gives a testimony of the art and culture of that era. The complex has 7 gates in all that has both artistic and strategic significance. The fort has dark congested stairs, which is a common feature of all the historical forts as it acts as an obstacle for the invading army. If you are truly up for it, you can fancy scaling the whole 36 km stretch of the wall that moves through scenic valleys and thick forests. The sanctuary is home to a wide diversity of species that can be found thriving in this unique landscape. Kumbhalgarh is truly a MOMENT OF REFUGE FOR SOMEONE WHO LIKES HISTORY, NATURE ……… …….WILDLIFE OR JUST A MOMENT OF PEACE. Harihar fort appears to be rectangular in shape from its base village. It is built on a triangular prism of rock. Its three faces and two edges are absolutely vertical 90 degrees. The third edge towards the west is inclined at an angle of 75 degrees. A one-meter wide rocky staircase with niches in it is carved out for ascending & descending the fort. There are 117 steps in all. After you climb the first rocky staircase main entrance we walk thru below an overhang with a sheer drop. Again one has to climb a set of steep stairs with niches, then pass thru a staircase inside the rock like Peth Fort - Kothaligad Fort and then reach the top of the fort. The view from the top is excellent. After climbing these steps, we get up to the entrance door. The fort has got a tapering plateau with a raised level in the middle. There is a small temple of Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva on the plateau. A small pond is there in front of this temple. Water from this pond can be used for drinking. Making headway from here we come across a palace having two rooms in it. 10 to 12 persons can be accommodated in this palace. One of the vertical drops of the fort facing the Nirgudpada village is called 'Scottish kada', perhaps because it was climbed for the first time in November 1986 by Doug Scott, the legendary Himalayan mountaineer & took him two days to do the climb. Lohagad (Marathi: लोहगड, iron fort) is one of the many hill forts of Maharashtra state in India. Situated close to the hill station Lonavala and 52 km (32 mi) northwest of Pune, Lohagad rises to an elevation of 1,033 m (3,389 ft) above sea level. The fort is connected to the neighboring Visapur fort by a small range. Accessibility[edit] Lohagad fort walls Lohagad fort can be accessed by various modes of travel. The nearest airport is the Pune International Airport. The proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport will serve as the nearest airport in the coming future. The nearest train station is Malavli, which can be accessed by suburban trains between Lonavala and Pune. The nearest major train station is Lonavala, on the Mumbai-Pune railway line. It is absolutely safe and many vendors selling onion fritters and lemonade are present by the roadside. One can cut across the hills as well. However it is not recommended to play in the waterfall as there is a risk of slippage and injury. A variety of birds and insects can also be spotted in these hills. History : History[edit] The fort has witnessed lots of historic events, including the birth of Shivaji's son Rajaram, the death of Shivaji's Queen Saibai, the return of Shivaji from Agra, the burial of Afzal Khan's head in the Mahadarwaja walls of Balle Killa, the strict words of Sonopant Dabir to Shivaji, and the Khandoji Khopade event. This fort was also one of the 17 forts that Shivaji kept when he signed the Treaty of Purandar (1665) with the Rajput king Jai Singh in 1665 who was leading the Mughal forces. 23 other forts were handed over to the Mughals under this treaty. Routes One can climb the fort from numerous route from villages at the base of Rajgad, 1)starting from Gunjavne (Gunjavne Darwaja or Chor Darwaja both on Padmavati Machee, and a tough route to Chor Darwaja near Nedhe on Suvela Machi). Pali Darwaja is historically the main and easier route. 2) The route for Pali Darwaja is from Wajeghar-Pali. 3) From Chirmudi village (Chor Darwaja on Padmavati Machee), the route meets corresponding route from Gunjavne) 4) From village Bhutunde (Alu Darwaja on Sanjeevani Machee via Dhanghar Vada) 5) From Male (Chor Darwaja on Kaleshwari Buruj, Suvela Machee). 6) From route coming from Budhla Machee of Torna comes through a connecting ridge to Alu Darwaja on Sanjeevani Machi.
